Muhammad Babar Chaudhry, Wire Fraud, Missouri 2023

ST. LOUIS – In a shocking revelation that has sent ripples through the grocery industry, an Ohio man, Muhammad Babar Chaudhry, 46, stands accused of siphoning off millions from a Missouri grocery chain. The U.S. District Court in St. Louis indicted Chaudhry on July 23 with four counts of wire fraud, and he was nabbed Wednesday night.

Chaudhry’s alleged enterprise, Sunshine Stores LLC, based in southern Ohio, has been charged with orchestrating a complex scheme involving the fraudulent acquisition of over $15 million worth of groceries and inventory from the Missouri chain. The indictment reveals that starting in May 2021, Chaudhry’s licensed stores were supplied by the Missouri chain. However, come March 2023, the tables turned as Chaudhry ordered $7.6 million worth of goods with no plans to pay.

His deceitful tactics didn’t end there. In April 2023, he doubled down on his scheme, ordering another $7.5 million. The Missouri chain was misled repeatedly, with employees being told that Chaudhry was out of the country or that fictitious ‘fraudulent activity’ prevented payments. Meanwhile, Chaudhry depleted his bank accounts to thwart any attempts at retrieving funds, while falsely claiming to wire payments.

But this wasn’t just a financial crime; it was a deliberate attack on the grocery stores themselves. A motion seeking Chaudhry’s pre-trial detention highlights additional acts of sabotage, including the theft of copper worth $1 million from one store and concrete being poured down sinks and drains at the victim company’s locations.

Charges against Chaudhry are merely accusations; he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Should he be found guilty, he faces up to 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. This case has been investigated by the FBI and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Derek Wiseman.

Wire fraud is no joke, and Chaudhry’s alleged actions are a stark reminder of the lengths some will go to for financial gain. The grocery industry watches with bated breath as this case unfolds in the courts.
