Buffalo Man Gets 8 Years in Prison for Cocaine Trafficking
Tonawanda, NY – In a major blow to the region’s cocaine trade, 35-year-old Keith Simmons was sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in managing a large-scale cocaine trafficking organization in Western New York. Simmons, who was convicted of cocaine trafficking, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael L. McCabe, Simmons was at the helm of a drug-trafficking operation that distributed at least 50 kilograms of cocaine between 2004 and his arrest in July 2009. The organization had a significant presence in Niagara County and northern Erie County, with sales taking place at several local establishments, including Papa Joe’s Restaurant on Niagara Falls Boulevard and J.T. Wheatfield’s Bar and Restaurant on Ward Road in Wheatfield.
Simmons was one of 21 defendants arrested in July 2009, all of whom have since been convicted. Today’s sentencing marks the culmination of a lengthy investigation led by Special Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Christopher M. Piehota, along with officers from the Niagara County Drug Task Force, the Niagara Falls Police Department, the Amherst Police Department, and other law enforcement agencies.
According to authorities, Simmons’ organization was a major player in the region’s cocaine trade, with sales taking place at multiple locations throughout Western New York. The investigation, which spanned several years, resulted in the conviction of all 21 defendants, a significant success for law enforcement in the region.
