Tony Clanton, Convicted of Five Armed Robberies, Faces 25 Years in Prison
A federal jury in the Eastern District of New York has convicted Tony Clanton, also known as ‘Tone,’ of five armed robberies and attempted robberies in Brooklyn, Staten Island, and New Jersey. The charges include Hobbs Act robbery conspiracy, two counts of Hobbs Act robbery, attempted Hobbs Act robbery, and use of firearms during crimes of violence.
The string of robberies and attempted robberies were committed at gunpoint by Clanton and his co-conspirators between January 2023 and July 2023. The victims included two children who witnessed their parents being shot at or menaced with guns.
When sentenced, Clanton faces a mandatory minimum term of 25 years in prison and up to life in prison. The verdict followed a six-day trial before United States District Judge Kiyo A. Matsumoto.
“Over a six-month period, Clanton directed a cruel and violent spree in New York City and New Jersey that left terrorized robbery victims in his wake,” stated United States Attorney John J. Durham. “Thanks to exceptional investigative work by the FBI and the NYPD, the defendant was identified, apprehended, and rightly convicted today by jurors who were presented with a mountain of evidence that demonstrated his crime wave and overwhelmingly proved his guilt.”
The case was investigated by the FBI and the NYPD, with assistance from the Edison, New Jersey Police Department. The FBI Safe Streets Task Forces spearheaded the investigation, which resulted in the identification and apprehension of Clanton and his co-conspirators.
“Tony Clanton is a serial violent criminal who has gone to great lengths to terrorize his victims in the pursuit of monetary gain,” stated FBI Newark Acting Special Agent in Charge Terence G. Reilly. “The FBI won’t rest until violent organized criminals are taken off the street so victims and others in the community may sleep soundly, and know justice has been served.”
Tony Clanton, also known as “Tone,” faces a mandatory minimum term of 25 years in prison and up to life in prison when sentenced. The conviction brings an end to a violent spree that had no place in New York City communities.
