Topeka Man Faces 10 Years for Gun Charge
A Topeka man has pleaded guilty to a federal gun charge, putting him at risk of a decade-long prison sentence and a hefty fine. Troy A. Kurtti, 21, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction.
Troy A. Kurtti was arrested on July 15, 2013, at the Value Place Hotel in Topeka after a manager reported receiving a bad check as payment for a room. When police found him hiding in a bathroom, they discovered a .25 caliber pistol in a trash can.
Kurtti was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to prior convictions in Shawnee County District Court for possession of methamphetamine, eluding police, and theft. He now faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.
Sentencing is set for June 9. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Hathaway taking the lead on prosecution.
