Sentencing Handed Down in Meth Trafficking Case
MISSOULA, MT – A devastating blow was dealt to the methamphetamine trade in Montana yesterday as Phillip Devon Johnson, 26, of Spokane, WA, was sentenced to 48 months in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release.
Johnson pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and Chief United States District Judge Dana L. Christensen handed down the sentence.
The case began on April 26, 2017, when law enforcement received information that Johnson was coming to Montana to deliver approximately eight ounces of methamphetamine. He was stopped in his vehicle by Montana Highway Patrol, and a canine alerted to drugs in his vehicle.
A later search revealed 190.4 grams of pure methamphetamine, the equivalent of over 1,500 dosage units that could have otherwise reached users in Montana.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tara Elliott and investigated by the Northwest Drug Task Force.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office is partnering with federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement to identify those responsible for significant violent crime in Montana, as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program. Today’s sentencing is a testament to the effectiveness of this endeavor.
The quantities of methamphetamine involved in this case are staggering, and the potential harm it could have caused would have been catastrophic. Fortunately, law enforcement intervened and Johnson is now facing the consequences of his actions.
Johnson’s sentencing serves as a warning to those involved in the methamphetamine trade: Montana is committed to fighting this scourge, and those who engage in it will face severe penalties.
