South Carolina Woman Sentenced to 15 Years Imprisonment for Firearm and Ammunition Violation
A 57-year-old woman from Greenville, South Carolina has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, according to authorities. Peggy Shelton McCarson was sentenced to 180 months imprisonment, followed by 5 years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to the charges.
The charges stem from a traffic stop in January 2017, where officers found a Smith and Wesson 9 mm handgun, 2 magazines with 32 rounds of ammunition, and a box containing methamphetamine, marijuana, and a set of digital scales in the car McCarson was a passenger in. McCarson admitted that the gun and drugs belonged to her.
A search warrant was later executed at McCarson’s residence in Travelers Rest, where officers found another firearm, ammunition, and additional methamphetamine. McCarson’s prior criminal history, which includes six felony convictions for armed robbery, made her an armed career criminal and prohibited her from possessing a firearm and ammunition.
The case was investigated by agents of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina Highway Patrol, and ATF, and was prosecuted as part of Project CeaseFire, a joint federal, state, and local initiative focused on aggressively prosecuting firearm cases to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer.
United States Attorney Sherri A. Lydon stated that McCarson’s sentence is a result of her guilty plea and the evidence presented in the case. Senior United States District Judge Henry M. Herlong, Jr. of Greenville sentenced McCarson on June 13, 2018.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeanne Howard handled the case, which was part of a larger effort to reduce violent crime in the community. The case is an example of the efforts being made to hold individuals accountable for their crimes and to keep the community safe.
