MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A Martinsburg man is facing serious charges after being indicted on a firearms charge, announced United States Attorney William Ihlenfeld.
Travis Jackson Latta, 34, is accused of having a 9mm pistol in May 2020 in Berkeley County, despite being prohibited from having a firearm due to a felony conviction.
Latta is charged with one count of “Unlawful Possession of a Firearm,” a serious offense that carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a fine of up to $250,000.
Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Latta is facing a significant amount of time behind bars and a substantial fine if found guilty. The maximum punishment for the crime is a 10-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and the Martinsburg Police Department investigated the matter.
An indictment is merely an accusation. Latta is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Latta’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of following the law and the consequences of violating it. The Martinsburg community can rest assured that those who break the law will be held accountable.
