Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, Attempted Murder, Nebraska 2025

BELLEVUE, NEBRASKA – A violent struggle with federal agents has landed Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, 30, of Venezuela, in federal custody. Hurtado-Cariaco, allegedly a member of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang, is charged with attempted murder and assault of a federal officer following an incident in Sarpy County on June 18, 2025. The incident unfolded after agents attempted a traffic stop related to an active immigration warrant.

According to a criminal complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations and FBI agents initiated a traffic stop on Hurtado-Cariaco near his Bellevue residence. While complying initially, exiting the vehicle with hands raised, the situation quickly devolved into a brutal fight. Hurtado-Cariaco allegedly engaged one Special Agent in hand-to-hand combat, throwing the agent to the ground with enough force to cause a head and elbow impact against the pavement.

The complaint details a relentless assault. Despite efforts by a second agent to subdue Hurtado-Cariaco, he continued to resist, eventually gaining a position to choke the first agent. Ignoring commands, he maintained the chokehold until the second agent intervened with a counter-hold. Even after releasing his grip, Hurtado-Cariaco broke free and fled on foot, leading agents on a chase to his apartment where he was ultimately apprehended without further incident.

The injured agent received immediate medical attention for their injuries. Attorney General Pamela Bondi was quick to condemn the attack, stating, “Deadly violence against law enforcement officers will not be tolerated by this Department of Justice. We have charged this illegal alien with attempted murder.” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the commitment to “swift and decisive justice” for attacks on those who serve the community.

United States Attorney Lesley A. Woods added, “Violence against federal law enforcement officers in the line of duty will not be tolerated in Nebraska. These federal agents maintained their professionalism while being met with potentially fatal violence.” Hurtado-Cariaco appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Ryan C. Carson on June 20, 2025, who ordered him detained pending a preliminary and detention hearing scheduled for June 24, 2025.

If convicted, Hurtado-Cariaco faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and up to five years of supervised release. The investigation is being led by Homeland Security Investigations. A criminal complaint is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
