BANGOR, Maine – In a shocking turn of events, Tristan Nelson, a 39-year-old man from Madawaska, Maine, has pleaded guilty to illegally importing methylphenidate and alprazolam.
According to court records, the package containing the illicit substances arrived at the Madawaska post office on February 22, 2017. The package, sent from the Philippines, contained approximately 950 methylphenidate pills and about 450 alprazolam pills.
Nelson admitted to agents that he had purchased the pills online and knew they were shipped from outside of the United States. He also stated that he intended to distribute some of the pills, further solidifying the severity of the crime.
The defendant faces up to 20 years in prison for importing methylphenidate, as well as between three years and life on supervised release, and a $1,000,000 fine.
For importing alprazolam, Nelson faces up to 5 years in prison, between one year and life on supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
Nelson will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office.
