Trousdale Turner Guard Indicted for Assault, Obstruction

A disturbing indictment unsealed today reveals the shocking abuse of power by a former supervisory corrections officer at the Trousdale Turner Correctional Facility in Hartsville, Tennessee. Kenan Lister, a 42-year-old man from Clarksville, is accused of using unlawful force on an inmate, being deliberately indifferent to the inmate’s medical needs, and obstructing justice.

According to the indictment, on August 30, 2019, Lister punched an inmate in the head while the man was sitting in a holding cell, knocking him to the ground. He then kicked, punched, and struck the inmate multiple times in his head, chest, and torso after he was on the ground. The inmate sustained bodily injury as a result of the assault.

Despite Lister’s knowledge that the inmate needed medical attention, he failed to provide medical care or make the necessary notifications to get the inmate medical care. In a disturbing attempt to cover his tracks, Lister submitted a false report that omitted his use of force entirely.

edLister’s actions are a stark reminder of the importance of holding those in positions of power accountable for their actions. The FBI investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Sara Beth Myers and Civil Rights Division Trial Attorney Michael J. Songer will prosecute the case.

edLister faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for the civil rights charges and up to 20 years in prison for the obstruction charge, as well as a maximum of three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

An indictment is merely an accusation, and Lister is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. His initial appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge is scheduled for later today.

The Trousdale Turner Correctional Facility has faced scrutiny in the past, and this indictment serves as a stark reminder of the need for reform and accountability within the correctional system.
