Troy Leroy James, 47, Indicted for Marijuana Trafficking and Firearm Charges

Tracy, California resident Troy Leroy James has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Rapid City, South Dakota for selling marijuana in the area and for possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

According to the indictment, James was charged with Possession With Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance and Possession of a Firearm with Obliterated Serial Number. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years’ imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.

James appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on January 31, 2013 and pled not guilty to the indictment. The investigation is being conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman is prosecuting the case, and James was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date has not been set.

The charges against James are merely an accusation and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is ongoing, and it is unclear what motivated James to sell marijuana in the area or why he possessed a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
