Corpus Christi, Texas – A gritty trial has culminated in the conviction of 47-year-old Jose Eduardo Rocha for smuggling illegal aliens across the US-Mexico border. The Seagoville resident faced a jury that took less than an hour to return a guilty verdict after a swift two-day trial.
On February 10, Rocha was stopped at the Border Patrol checkpoint near Falfurrias, Texas. His demeanor raised red flags; Rocha appeared jittery, constantly glancing around and avoiding direct eye contact with law enforcement. A flashlight beam into his tractor trailer’s cab revealed a blanket-covered figure on top of a bunk, setting off alarm bells.
Attempts to open the side sleeper door were thwarted by a locked mechanism. According to testimony, Rocha claimed it was broken, but x-ray scans soon exposed the ruse. Inside, four illegal aliens from El Salvador and Guatemala were discovered, stowed away in various compartments of the truck’s interior.
The defense argued that Rocha’s non-resistance indicated his ignorance of the hidden humans. However, the jury saw through this, deeming him guilty as charged. Sentencing is set for January 6, 2026, where Rocha faces up to five years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
U.S. District Judge David S. Morales presided over the trial, while Customs and Border Protection conducted the investigation and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ashley A. Pruitt and Young M. Burkett prosecuted the case. Rocha is currently on bond pending his sentencing.
This conviction is part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative targeting illegal immigration, cartels, and transnational criminal organizations. The operation leverages resources from various task forces, including Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood.
