Tucson, AZ – Eric David Marrufo, 43, will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being sentenced to life in prison for the systematic sexual abuse of children. The sentencing, handed down July 27, 2023, by U.S. District Judge Cindy K. Jorgenson, closes a disturbing chapter in a case that spanned years and devastated young victims.
Marrufo was convicted on five counts of Aggravated Sexual Abuse of a Child and one count of Abusive Sexual Contact With a Child. The jury found him guilty of preying on his victims at his home on the Pascua Yaqui Indian Reservation between August 1, 2006, and August 1, 2008. The prolonged period of abuse underscores the calculated and predatory nature of Marrufo’s crimes.
The investigation, a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pascua Yaqui Police Department, peeled back layers of secrecy and brought the horrific acts to light. Investigators faced significant challenges navigating the complexities of the reservation and building trust with the community to ensure the safety and well-being of potential witnesses.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew C. Cassell and Rui Wang, of the District of Arizona, meticulously built the case against Marrufo, presenting damning evidence that left no doubt as to his guilt. Their relentless pursuit of justice ensured that Marrufo would be held accountable for the irreparable harm he inflicted on his victims. This wasn’t just a legal case; it was about giving a voice to those who were silenced for far too long.
Marrufo, a member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, betrayed the trust placed in him and violated the core values of his community. While the sentencing offers a measure of closure for the victims and their families, the emotional scars will undoubtedly remain. The feds made it clear that such predatory behavior will not be tolerated, especially within vulnerable communities.
This case is a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of child sexual abuse and the importance of vigilance. Anyone with information about potential abuse is urged to contact the FBI at (602) 514-7413 or the Pascua Yaqui Police Department.
