Two Houston Men Convicted in Pasadena Bank Robbery
A federal jury has found two Houston men guilty of attempting to rob and robbing the Shared Resources Credit Union in Pasadena, Texas, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Abe Martinez.
Raynard Gray, 33, and Sonny Pervis, 27, both of Houston, were convicted on all counts as charged following a three-day trial. The jury deliberated for less than five hours before reaching a verdict.
The attempted robbery and robbery of the credit union occurred on July 26 and July 28, 2014, respectively. A total of seven men were involved in the planning and execution of the robbery. Gray was found to be the leader of the group and acted as a lookout during the robberies, while Pervis brandished and discharged a firearm during the incident.
During the trial, the jury heard testimony from 12 witnesses, including a sergeant with the Pasadena Police Department who collected evidence from the abandoned vehicle used by the robbers. The jury also saw surveillance videos, photos, and police dash camera footage of the high-speed chase that followed the robbery.
The defense argued that Pervis and Gray were not involved in the robbery, but the jury was not convinced. They will face up to 25 years in prison for the attempted robbery and robbery of the credit union, as well as mandatory consecutive five-year and 25-year sentences for using a firearm during the crimes.
The remaining five co-defendants, Chris Braziel, Keith McGee, Howard Glaze, Kwhun Johnson, and Leroy Richardson, all of Houston, previously pleaded guilty to their roles in the robberies and will be sentenced on June 15, 2017. The FBI and police departments in Pasadena and Houston conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Richard Hanes and Heather Winter prosecuting the case.
U.S. District Judge Sim Lake presided over the trial and set sentencing for June 15, 2017. Pervis and Gray will remain in custody pending sentencing.
