CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a shocking turn of events, Twyjuan Demetric Jenkins, 29, of Charlotte, has been sentenced to 2 ½ years in prison for his role in a massive identity theft scheme. According to court documents, Jenkins was found guilty of conspiring to commit aggravated identity theft and aggravated identity theft.
The scheme, which took place from 2018 to May 2020, involved Jenkins and his co-conspirators using the stolen personal identifying information (PII) of actual persons to withdraw cash, lease apartments, rent hotel rooms, and make fraudulent purchases exceeding $95,000. The co-conspirators also used the stolen PII to obtain, possess, and use firearms and ammunition at two different shooting ranges in Mecklenburg County.
U.S. District Judge Max O. Cogburn Jr. handed down the sentence, which also includes three years of supervised release and $75,150 in restitution. Jenkins’ co-defendant, Andrell Nachef Walker, was previously sentenced to 37 months in prison and three years of supervised release for his role in the scheme. Both defendants were ordered to pay $75,150 in restitution.
The investigation into the scheme was led by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael E. Savage prosecuted the case.
As part of the scheme, Jenkins and his co-conspirators used the stolen PII to obtain and use firearms and ammunition at two different shooting ranges in Mecklenburg County. This raises serious concerns about the ease with which individuals can obtain firearms and ammunition using stolen identities.
Tywjuan Demetric Jenkins’ case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of identity theft. His sentence and the restitution ordered by the court will help to bring some measure of justice to the victims of this scheme.
