Tyland Witherspoon Sentenced for Illicit Gun Possession
A 28-year-old Aliquippa resident has been handed a significant prison sentence for his involvement in a serious crime. Tyland Witherspoon, a convicted felon, was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition, a serious offense in the eyes of the law.
According to court documents, on June 19, 2024, Witherspoon was discovered to be in possession of a Glock 23 .40 caliber pistol along with Smith & Wesson .40 caliber ammunition. This discovery led to a federal investigation, which ultimately resulted in Witherspoon’s conviction for possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.
Witherspoon’s actions are a stark reminder of the dangers posed by illegal firearms in our communities. The law is clear: convicted felons are not permitted to possess firearms or ammunition. Those who disregard this law risk severe consequences.
On July 28, 2025, United States District Judge William S. Stickman IV handed down a 45-month prison sentence to Witherspoon, to be followed by three years of federal supervised release. This sentence reflects the severity of Witherspoon’s offense and the need to keep our communities safe.
The successful prosecution of Witherspoon was the result of a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. Acting United States Attorney Troy Rivetti commended the agencies involved in the investigation, praising their dedication to bringing criminals to justice.
Assistant United States Attorney Nicole A. Stockey prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, ensuring that Witherspoon’s actions were held accountable. As we continue to tackle the complex issue of gun violence, it is essential that we hold those responsible for illicit firearm possession accountable for their actions.
