Tyler Edward Perkins, 30, Sentenced to 7 Years in Federal Prison for Possession of Child Pornography
Greenbelt, MD – U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang sentenced Tyler Edward Perkins, a 30-year-old instructional assistant from Huntingtown, MD, to seven years in federal prison for possession of child pornography. Perkins was also ordered to pay $12,000 in restitution and register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.
According to court documents, Perkins distributed child sexual abuse material to others, which was taken into account by Judge Chuang in imposing the sentence. The investigation revealed that Perkins had uploaded files containing child pornography to the instant messaging platform Kik, which were then distributed to other users in private chats.
Law enforcement executed a search warrant at Perkins’s residence on June 1, 2022, after receiving a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. During the search, authorities seized several electronic devices, which contained at least 600 images of child sexual abuse material, including videos documenting the sexual abuse of minors.
Perkins’s guilty plea agreement stated that he was an instructional assistant at a school for children requiring special education services. The investigation did not reveal any evidence of Perkins committing any sexual assault or having illegal contact with any child.
United States Attorney Erek L. Barron commended HSI, the Maryland State Police Computer Crimes Unit, the Maryland State Apprehension Team, and the Calvert County State’s Attorney’s Office for their work in the investigation.
Perkins’s sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron, Special Agent in Charge James C. Harris of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Baltimore, Colonel Roland L. Butler, Jr., Superintendent of the Maryland State Police, and Calvert County State’s Attorney Robert Harvey.
