TYLER, Texas – A 34-year-old man from Tyler has been handed a harsh sentence for swindling the government out of nearly $222K.
Raymond Kyle Welsh, 34, was sentenced to three years’ probation by U.S. District Judge Leonard E. Davis following his guilty plea on Jan. 3, 2013, to theft of government property.
Welsh was also ordered to pay $222,162.14 in restitution and submit to the forfeiture of another $26,588.
From January 2003 to September 2010, Welsh secretly pocketed nearly $26,588 from the Social Security Administration’s Supplemental Income (SSI) payments, and a staggering $195,574.14 from the Department of Health and Human Services through Medicaid benefits. He admitted knowing full well that he was not entitled to these funds, which were meant for the U.S. government.
This case was meticulously investigated by the Social Security Administration and aggressively prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Ann Cozby, who ensured Welsh faced justice for his deceitful actions.
U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced the sentence, emphasizing the severity of Welsh’s crime and the need to hold him accountable.
