ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The grim aftermath of Typhoon Halong’s flooding has left Alaskans in a dire state, but the Department of Justice is warning that this disaster is also attracting fraudulent schemes. With over 1,500 victims needing aid, crooks are seeking to exploit the vulnerable with up to 30 years in federal prison for their crimes.
Operationally known as the National Center for Disaster Fraud (NCDF), a joint effort between DOJ and various agencies, aims to combat this exploitation by improving detection and prosecution. These criminals use email, social media, and fake websites to deceive individuals into providing personal information or donating to fraudulent causes.
The NCDF has documented thousands of complaints involving fake charities soliciting donations, impersonation of government officials for financial gain, and theft from abandoned properties. To protect themselves, residents are urged to donate only through verified channels and never respond to unsolicited requests for funds or personal data.
Among the most common frauds reported are:
- Fake charities using well-known names to solicit donations
- Impersonation of government officials for financial aid information
- Solicitation of investments in non-existent ventures
- Price-gouging for essential goods and services
The DOJ reminds the public that such fraudulent activities are not just a disappointment but a criminal act. It is crucial for all to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.
