Defendant Gets 24 Months for Identity Theft
CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – Tyree Skipper, a 44-year-old man from Euclid, Ohio, has been handed a 24-month sentence for aggravated identity theft, Acting United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen announced.
Skipper was found guilty of obtaining identifying information of individuals to file fraudulent tax returns in Ohio, South Carolina, and Hawaii from December 2012 to May 2013 in Gilmer County, West Virginia.
According to court documents, Skipper admitted to obtaining the identifying information of individuals to file fraudulent tax returns. He pled guilty to two counts of aggravated identify theft in February 2017.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew R. Cogar handled the prosecution on behalf of the government. The Internal Revenue Service and the Special Investigative Services Unit of the Bureau of Prisons investigated the case.
U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley presided over the case.
Prosecutors said that Skipper’s actions resulted in significant financial losses for the victims. The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of the government to protecting the public from identity theft and other financial crimes.
The sentence was imposed after Skipper’s guilty plea in February 2017. He will serve his 24-month sentence in a federal prison.
