Jerod Arthur Young, Fentanyl Distribution, Utah 2024

Fentanyl Overdose Suspect Ordered to Remain in Custody

A 48-year-old man from Fort Duchesne, Utah, is facing serious charges in connection with a fentanyl-related death in Uintah County. Jerod Arthur Young, 48, was ordered to remain in custody by a U.S. Magistrate Judge after a federal grand jury indicted him on charges of distributing fentanyl that resulted in the victim’s death.

According to court documents, Young intentionally distributed fentanyl to the victim on November 15, 2023, which led to her fatal overdose. An investigation by the FBI Salt Lake City Field Office’s Vernal Resident Agency revealed that the victim had communicated with Young and engaged in a financial transaction with him around the time of her death. The fentanyl pill found near the victim’s body tested positive for the illicit substance, and a medical examiner determined that the cause of death was fentanyl toxicity.

Young’s initial court appearance on the indictment took place on May 1, 2024, before a U.S. Magistrate Judge at the United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City. A three-day trial is scheduled for July 9, 2024. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sam Pead of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah announced the charges, citing the defendant’s alleged role in the fentanyl-related death. U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins emphasized the gravity of the crime and the importance of holding those responsible accountable. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities nationwide.

An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of fentanyl distribution and the importance of law enforcement efforts to prevent such tragedies. As the investigation continues, the community can expect to see a robust prosecution of those involved in this heinous crime.

The PSN program, launched in 2021, focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting strategic enforcement priorities. By working together, law enforcement agencies and community organizations can reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer for everyone. The case against Young is a testament to the success of this initiative and the dedication of law enforcement agencies to keeping communities safe.
