UNO Tutor Sentenced for Child Enticement
A former University of Nebraska Omaha graduate student has been sentenced to 210 months in prison for coercing a minor into sex.
Zhijun Xia, 30, a Chinese national, was found guilty of Coercion and Enticement of a Minor after luring a 15-year-old girl into a sex act in 2018.
According to court documents, Xia met the victim’s mother who hired him to tutor the girl in Chinese. He began tutoring her in June 2018 and eventually convinced her to meet with him in person for tutoring sessions.
Xia began communicating with the victim over the social media application WeChat and inquired about her sexual history. He then messaged her about his plan to visit her at a summer camp in Lincoln, where he reserved a room at the Red Roof Inn and Suites.
On July 11, 2018, Xia picked up the victim from the University of Nebraska campus and took her to the Red Roof Inn, where he subjected her to sexual penetration.
Judge John M. Gerrard noted that the victim suffered trauma and hoped she knew that the incidents would not shape her life. Xia will be deported back to China after serving his sentence.
In addition to the prison sentence, Xia was ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution and will be on supervised release for 5 years after his release. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.
