Kansas Schools Receive Federal Grants for Student Safety

In a move to bolster school security, three Kansas school systems have been awarded federal grants totaling $1,035,249, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said.

The money is part of a larger $85 million national award to support schools in preventing and responding to violent incidents.

“Schools should be safe places to learn and grow,” McAllister said. “We’re listening to students, parents, teachers and law enforcement officers throughout Kansas who told us they need help.”

The grants were awarded to Smoky Hill/Central Kansas Education Service Center, USD 417 Morris County Public Schools, and Wichita Public Schools USD 259.

Smoky Hill/Central Kansas Education Service Center received $249,998 to develop and operate anonymous reporting systems, encouraging students to report potential school threats.

The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services’ (COPS’) School Violence Prevention Program awarded $452,913 to USD 417 Morris County Public Schools and $332,438 to Wichita Public Schools USD 259.

The COPS School Violence Prevention Program aims to improve school safety through violence prevention, including training law enforcement officers, installing deterrents, and enhancing emergency notification technology.
