Honduran National Charged with Firearm Possession, Illegal Re-Entry in Louisiana

New Orleans, LA – A Honduran national has been charged with firearm possession and illegal re-entry in Louisiana, announced U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans. Vairo Lobo-Barahona, 30, was indicted for being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm and illegal re-entry by a removed alien.

According to the indictment, on or about November 23, 2023, Lobo-Barahona, an alien illegally present in the United States, was found in possession of a Smith and Wesson handgun. Lobo-Barahona faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 15 years, a fine of up to $250,000, up to three years of supervised release, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.00 for the charge of being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm.

For the charge of illegal re-entry by a removed alien, Lobo-Barahona faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 2 years, up to one year of supervised release, and up to a $250,000 fine. He also faces payment of a $100 mandatory special assessment fee as to each charge.

U.S. Attorney Evans reiterated that an indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. He praised the work of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in investigating this matter.

Assistant United States Attorney Carter K.D. Guice, Jr. of the General Crimes Unit is in charge of the prosecution.
