Charvez Thompson, a 33-year-old Valdosta resident with over a dozen prior felony convictions, was sentenced to 84 months in prison for illegally possessing a firearm used in an assault. The incident occurred on June 22, 2024, when Valdosta Police officers responded to a residence and found the victim beaten and pistol-whipped. Thompson pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on April 2.
The case was a collaborative effort between the Valdosta Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with support from the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods. U.S. Attorney William R. “Will” Keyes stated that violent armed repeat offenders will be held accountable at the federal level for their crimes.
Thompson’s sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release. The removal of violent career criminals from the community is a priority for law enforcement, and this case demonstrates the effectiveness of collaboration between local, state, and federal agencies.
Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan emphasized the importance of partnerships with federal law enforcement partners in keeping neighborhoods safe. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Leslie Abrams Gardner on July 29.
