SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In a harrowing turn of events, Vallejo’s Joshua Wayne Thompson, 25, pleaded guilty today to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott broke the news, revealing Thompson’s guilt.
According to court documents, on Nov. 18, 2019, law enforcement officers were forced to chase Thompson down after witnessing him exit a Vallejo residence. In a high-speed pursuit that ended with Thompson attempting to ram his vehicle into a Deputy U.S. Marshal’s car, the suspect was eventually subdued and arrested.
At the time of his capture, Thompson was found in possession of a loaded pistol equipped with a 25-round extended magazine, an illegal possession due to his previous felony conviction. Thompson’s actions, which led to property damage and the potential for serious injury, serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who possess firearms in violation of federal laws.
This case is part of an intensive investigation spearheaded by the U.S. Marshals Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the California Highway Patrol. Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Thuesen will be handling the prosecution.
Thompson’s sentencing is scheduled for December 3, 2020, where he faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. However, the actual sentence will be determined by U.S. District Judge Morrison C. England, Jr., based on various factors including the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
The case is also aligned with Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer. It is part of the Department of Justice’s broader initiative, Project Guardian, designed to combat gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws.
