Vallejo Man Sentenced to 6 Years and 3 Months in Prison for Bank Fraud Scheme
A Vallejo man was sentenced to over 6 years in prison for his role in a bank fraud and identity theft scheme. Matthew Core, 39, was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller.
Core was part of a scheme to defraud banks in Northern California. He and others used counterfeit U.S. Postal Service keys to break into residential mailboxes, stealing mail and harvesting bankcards, personal and business checks, and government-issued IDs.
According to court documents, Core and his accomplices altered some of the checks and bankcards with the intent to use them to defraud financial institutions. In one instance, Core deposited an altered check into his own bank account at an ATM in Vallejo.
Core committed these acts with the intent to defraud JP Morgan Chase, which was insured by FDIC. He also knowingly possessed counterfeit U.S. Postal Service keys and unauthorized bankcards. On August 29, 2018, Core and others were arrested in Granite Bay, and he was found to be in possession of at least four counterfeit U.S. Postal Service keys and two U.S. Postal Service locks.
Core had previously pleaded guilty and was released from custody on pretrial release. However, he absconded from a residential drug treatment program and was rearrested in July 2020. During his arrest, law enforcement officers found an assault rifle and an empty 15-round magazine for a Springfield .45-caliber handgun in the trunk of his car.
This case was the product of an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, the Vallejo Police Department, and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. Core has been in custody since his rearrest and will begin serving his sentence immediately.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert J. Artuz is prosecuting the case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California is committed to holding individuals accountable for their crimes and protecting the community from financial crimes and identity theft.
