Luis Alberto Vega-Lili, Use or Possession of a Fraudulent Immigration Document, California 2025

GREAT FALLS – The dark underbelly of illegal immigration in the United States was exposed once again as Luis Alberto Vega-Lili, a 57-year-old Mexican national, was sentenced to time served for possessing a fraudulent immigration document.

Vega-Lili pleaded guilty in May 2025 to one count of use or possession of a fraudulent immigration document. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris oversaw the proceeding that saw Vega-Lili receive a sentence of 121 days, which was time served upon his arrest.

The defendant’s journey into legal limbo began on March 11, 2025, when he was found aboard a train in Havre, Montana. According to U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme, Vega-Lili admitted to being an illegal Mexican citizen and lacked the necessary paperwork for entry or residence in the United States.

During a secondary security search, agents discovered not only a fraudulent social security card but also a fraudulent permanent resident card imprinted with information belonging to an Indian national from Texas. This card was found concealed in the sole of Vega-Lili’s boot.

The case against Vega-Lili was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, with the investigation conducted by the U.S. Border Patrol. It is a stark reminder of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs).

Operation Take Back America leverages resources from the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN), showcasing the government’s commitment to protecting American communities from violent crime and its perpetrators.
