In a disturbing case, Vencacio Ortiz-Leon, a 29-year-old Guatemalan national, has pleaded guilty to illegal re-entry in Louisiana.
According to the Bill of Information, Ortiz-Leon was found in the United States after having been officially deported and removed on January 27, 2011.
The incident occurred on June 3, 2017, when Ortiz-Leon was discovered in the country despite being ordered to leave.
Ortiz-Leon faces a maximum term of imprisonment of two years and a fine of $250,000, one year supervised release after imprisonment, and a $100.00 special assessment.
U.S. District Judge Carl J. Barbier has set sentencing for November 16, 2017.
Acting U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the United States Department of Homeland Security, Immigration Enforcement in investigating this matter.
Assistant United States Attorney Irene González is in charge of the prosecution.
