PHILADELPHIA – In a stunning revelation, United States Attorney David Metcalf has charged ViaClean Technologies, LLC and its founder, James Young, 46, with a multi-faceted fraud scheme. The duo is accused of conspiring to commit mail and wire fraud, as well as violating the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).
Young, from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and his associate Sean Storrie, 59, of Philadelphia, are alleged to have falsely marketed pesticides as effective against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The indicted companies claimed their products, which were designed to combat bacteria and fungi, could eliminate Covid-19, a claim that is now being met with severe legal repercussions.
Both Young and Storrie appeared in federal magistrate court today, while ViaClean Technologies will face its initial hearing on September 5th. The charges stem from an investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Criminal Investigation Division and the United States Postal Inspection Service, prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth Abrams.
This isn’t just a case of false advertising; it’s about potentially putting public health at risk during a global pandemic. The defendants are also facing misdemeanor FIFRA violations for selling products with labels that didn’t match their approved master versions.
Despite the serious allegations, all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. However, for many, the actions of ViaClean Technologies and James Young have already cast a long shadow over the legitimate pesticide industry’s efforts to protect against health threats like Covid-19.
