Omaha City Councilman Vincent J. Palermo, 49, has been charged with public corruption and fraud in a shocking case that exposes the dark underbelly of local politics. In a stunning indictment, Palermo is accused of accepting lavish gifts and travel perks from a concrete contractor and a former police officer in exchange for official acts that benefited their companies.
According to the indictment, Palermo failed to disclose his personal benefits, including income, gifts, and other items of value, that he received from Omaha Glass Pro, a company that he voted to award city contracts to during the charged timeframes. He also allegedly concealed his status on federal probation when he applied for a PPP loan for approximately $68,000 that was later forgiven, which money went to the benefit of his sole proprietorship, Vinny’s Tree Service, and for his personal benefit.
The indictment also accuses Palermo of conspiring with former Omaha Police Officer Johnny Palermo, 47, and former Omaha Police Captain and former PACE Executive Director Richard Gonzalez, 55, to deprive the citizens of Nebraska of his honest services through paid travel benefits, including a luxury hotel suite, a trip to Las Vegas, and other destinations, among other items of value in exchange for official acts done for the benefit of the Latino Peace Officers’ Association (“LPOA”) and Police Athletics for Community Engagement (“PACE”).
Johnny Palermo faces 15 charges in both indictments, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, punishable by up to 20 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. He is also charged with wire fraud, honest services fraud, and making false statements on loan applications, punishable by up to 30 years’ imprisonment, a $1,000,000 fine, and five years of supervised release.
The case is a stark reminder of the corrupting influence of power and the need for accountability in government. As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: the people of Nebraska deserve better than a politician who would betray their trust for personal gain.
The indictment was returned by the Grand Jury this week in Omaha, Nebraska, and the case is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Nebraska. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement agencies.
The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
