Michael Graves, a 70-year-old man from Charlton Heights, West Virginia, has pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return. The scheme helped him hide millions of dollars in dirty cash from his industrial waste operations in Fayette County.

According to court documents, Graves underreported his income by over $608,000 between 2017 and 2020, causing a tax loss of over $140,000 to the Internal Revenue Service.

Graves, the owner of West Virginia Environmental Services, Inc., had previously pleaded guilty to violating the Clean Water Act in February 2023. He admitted to failing to maintain a landfill’s leachate collection system, causing toxic pollutants to discharge into a local waterway.

Graves faces up to 3 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and restitution of over $266,000. He is scheduled to be sentenced on July 30, 2026.
