PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The grim halls of federal court have once again echoed with justice as Thomas Hyatt-Baney, 22, a former resident of Wampum, Pennsylvania, has been handed a 17-year sentence for the despicable crime of producing child sexual abuse material.
United States District Judge Christy Criswell Wiegand imposed the severe penalty on August 28, 2025. The court also ordered that restitution will be levied at a future hearing, following the conviction of Hyatt-Baney for his heinous acts.
According to court documents, on June 25, 2023, the now-incarcerated man utilized his phone to capture three video clips showing the sexual exploitation of a toddler. The sentence handed down reflects his responsibility not only for these videos but also for another graphic depiction of the same child and the possession of hundreds more videos and images detailing the sexual abuse of minors.
Assistant United States Attorney Carolyn J. Bloch led the government’s prosecution against Hyatt-Baney, ensuring that justice was served on behalf of the innocent victims involved.
Acting United States Attorney Troy Rivetti saluted the relentless efforts of the Pennsylvania State Police and Homeland Security Investigations in bringing this predator to justice. The investigation leading to Hyatt-Baney’s conviction exemplifies the dedication of law enforcement to protect children from such horrors.
This case is a part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by federal prosecutors and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood coordinates resources on a national scale to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those who prey on children, while identifying and rescuing victims.
