A Washington D.C. man has been found guilty of possessing an illegal firearm and drug paraphernalia in a 2019 incident in Northwest Washington.
Demann Shelton, 31, of Washington, D.C., was convicted following a jury trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, of unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
The charges stem from an incident on December 18, 2019, when Metropolitan Police Department officers searched an illegally parked car in the 90 L Street NW area and found a loaded .40 caliber Glock 23 handgun, a digital scale with white powder residue, and $2,443 in cash in Shelton’s pants pocket.
According to court documents, Shelton was the sole backseat passenger in the car, and officers found a large black jacket on the backseat near where he had been sitting moments earlier. The jacket contained the handgun, ammunition, and other items.
U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department announced Shelton’s guilty verdict.
The Honorable Lynn Leibovitz scheduled sentencing for July 12, 2024, and ordered that Shelton remain held pending sentencing. The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Luke Albi and Leah Paisner of the General Crimes Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
The guilty verdict marks another conviction in the ongoing effort to combat gun violence and drug trafficking in Washington D.C.
Shelton’s sentencing is set for July 12, 2024. He faces a lengthy prison term for his crimes.
