COEUR D’ALENE – A chilling four-day federal jury trial concluded in Coeur d’Alene with the conviction of Jason Bergeron, 50, from Washington, for three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.
The court heard harrowing testimony detailing how Bergeron unleashed a firearm into his ex-girlfriend’s residence on the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation. The incident occurred while his former partner, her child, and son-in-law were inside. Fleeing with their toddler in tow, they bore witness to Bergeron’s relentless attack as he unleashed multiple rounds towards them.
Acting U.S. Attorney Justin Whatcott announced the guilty verdicts today, noting that the victims are all members of the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation. Each count of assault with a dangerous weapon carries a maximum penalty of ten years in federal prison, a fine up to $250,000, and supervised release for up to three years.
Sentencing is scheduled for September 24, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Amanda K. Brailsford at the federal courthouse in Coeur d’Alene. Bergeron now faces a potential total of 30 years behind bars.
Whatcott commended the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their relentless pursuit of justice, leading to the charges against Bergeron. He also expressed gratitude to the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Prosecutor and the Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney for their support in this case.
United States Attorneys Bryce Ellsworth and Adam Johnson prosecuted the case with Assistant United States Attorneys.
