LuCinda Marie Burlison, High-Speed Flight from Immigration Checkpoint, Arizona 2017

PHOENIX – In a high-profile case, LuCinda Marie Burlison, 42, of Lynnwood, Wash., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow for her brazen attempt to evade immigration authorities.

Burlison, who had previously pleaded guilty to high-speed flight from an immigration checkpoint, was nabbed on January 27, 2017, at the Border Patrol checkpoint on State Route 85 near Gila Bend. After agents informed her of a drug detection dog sniffing her vehicle, Burlison embarked on a high-speed chase that saw her evade federal agents for over 20 miles at speeds exceeding 80 miles per hour.

Fleeing from an immigration checkpoint in excess of the speed limit is a felony offense under federal law. It carries a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine. This conviction comes as part of a growing trend; over the past year, at least seven individuals have been prosecuted and convicted for similar offenses in the District of Arizona.

The investigation was carried out by the Department of Homeland Security-Homeland Security Investigations, with significant assistance from Border Patrol. The prosecution was handled by Matthew Binford, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona, Phoenix.

Burlison’s case number is CR-173-73-GMS, and her release number is 2017-040_Burlison.
