Baltimore, MD – Ahmad Qaabid Abdul Rahim, a 37-year-old man from College Park, Maryland, pleaded guilty to transporting stolen waste vegetable oil from restaurants in Maryland and Virginia.
According to court documents, Rahim and a friend stole waste vegetable oil (WVO) from restaurants using a flatbed tow truck and stored it at a warehouse in Baltimore County. They sold the stolen oil to out-of-state oil companies.
Rahim operated a legitimate waste oil collection company, Waste Not, Incorporated, from June through October 2011. However, during this time, he and a driver hired to assist him began stealing WVO from restaurants that did not have a collection contract with Waste Not.
Rahim altered the company’s master contract list and the driver’s manifest to disguise the thefts. He took both the stolen and legitimate WVO to a collection facility in Middle River, where it was sold to fuel companies in Pennsylvania and elsewhere.
Between January 18, 2012, and September 20, 2012, Waste Not received approximately $98,887 for the sale of 94,178 gallons of stolen WVO.
Rahim faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for transportation of stolen goods. U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz has scheduled sentencing for December 3, 2013, at 2:00 p.m.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the Baltimore County Police Department for their work in the investigation and thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory R. Bockin for prosecuting the case.
