Alexander Calderon, Illegal Firearm Possession, Connecticut 2024

Waterbury’s Alexander Calderon, a 28-year-old repeat offender, has been handed an 80-month federal prison sentence for illegal firearm possession and violating his supervised release. The U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut, Vanessa Roberts Avery, announced the stiff penalty imposed by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer.

Calderon’s criminal history includes a prior conviction for gang-related drug trafficking, which led to his initial 46-month imprisonment and subsequent supervised release term. However, he landed back in trouble when caught with a firearm after a shooting incident in Waterbury on March 21, 2022.

The court documents detail that Calderon was sentenced in April 2019 for the drug offense and released from prison in December 2021. It wasn’t long before he was back in the headlines; less than a year later, he discarded a silver handgun after a shooting at Scovill Street bar. The recovered firearm, a Walther PPK .380, matched the casing found at the scene.

Calderon’s guilty plea to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon was entered on January 5, 2024. Judge Meyer sentenced him to 64 months for the firearm offense and an additional eight months for violating his supervised release conditions.

This case was investigated by the Waterbury Police Department and the ATF. Assistant U.S. Attorney Natasha M. Freismuth prosecuted the case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce gun violence and violent crime. The PSN initiative, launched in May 2021, focuses on fostering community trust and strategic enforcement.
