HARTFORD, CT – John Eastman, 49, of Waterbury, Connecticut, confessed today to a sickening crime: using the internet to prey on children. Eastman pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea to one count of enticing minors to engage in sexually explicit conduct during online video chats. The details, laid bare in court documents, paint a disturbing picture of calculated manipulation and exploitation.
According to federal prosecutors, between June and November 2012, Eastman actively sought out vulnerable minors online. He engaged them in video chats using platforms like Skype, and then, under the guise of online interaction, he coaxed them into performing sexually suggestive acts. The depravity didn’t stop there. Eastman then recorded and photographed these encounters, storing the images on his computer – digital trophies of his abuse.
The prosecution revealed a particularly chilling tactic employed by Eastman. He masqueraded as popular teenage idols, specifically using the screen name “justin.bieber727” on Skype to deceive a female minor in November 2012. During a video chat, Eastman demanded the minor expose herself and pose in a sexually explicit manner. He subsequently saved a still image of the girl complying with his request, preserving a permanent record of his exploitation. This isn’t just about online chatting; it’s about grooming, manipulation, and the irreversible damage inflicted on a child.
United States Attorney Deirdre M. Daly made it clear that this case is a priority. “This prosecution demonstrates our continued commitment to protecting children from sexual abuse and exploitation in all its forms,” she stated. Judge Shea has scheduled sentencing for May 25, 2017. Eastman now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, with the potential for a life sentence. He has been held in custody since his arrest on related state charges in May 2013.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between Homeland Security Investigations and the Waterbury Police Department, highlighting the need for interagency cooperation in combating online child exploitation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Neeraj N. Patel and Anastasia E. King are leading the prosecution. This case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood Initiative, a nationwide program dedicated to protecting children from sexual abuse.
