A Rapid City, South Dakota man has been sentenced for possessing a firearm despite being a convicted felon. Waylon Loefer, 42, was found in possession of a Taurus, model PT840, .40 Smith & Wesson, semi-automatic pistol in February 2021.
The case against Loefer began with an indictment by a federal grand jury on June 17, 2021. He later pleaded guilty on September 27, 2021, to the charge of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person.
Loefer was sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an evidence-based program aimed at reducing violent crime. The initiative brings together a broad spectrum of stakeholders to identify and address the most pressing violent crime problems in the community.
The investigation into Loefer’s illicit firearm possession was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson prosecuted the case.
Loefer was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. His sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws.
As part of the PSN strategy, enforcement efforts focus on the most violent offenders and partner with locally based prevention and reentry programs to achieve lasting reductions in crime.
