Tampa, FL – Wayne Miner, 44, of Hudson, Florida has been charged with a serious crime that could land him behind bars for decades. According to United States Attorney Robert E. O’Neill, Miner has been accused of transportation, receipt, and possession of child pornography.
Miner allegedly traded child pornography with others using at least two e-mail addresses and the Internet. His computer and cellular phone contained numerous files of child pornography. If convicted, Miner faces a mandatory minimum of five years in federal prison and a maximum penalty of 50 years in federal prison.
The defendant’s computer and cellular phone contained numerous files of child pornography. A criminal complaint is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed a violation of the federal criminal laws, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, and the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. It will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer L. Peresie.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006. Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
The defendant’s next court appearance has not been announced. The investigation is ongoing, and it’s unclear what led investigators to Wayne Miner. One thing is certain, however – child pornography is a serious crime that carries severe penalties.
Miner’s case is a stark reminder of the dangers of online child exploitation. As law enforcement continues to crack down on these types of crimes, it’s essential for parents and guardians to be vigilant and educate their children about the risks of online predators.
