Omaha Man Sentenced to 235 Months for Attempted Coercion and Enticement of a Minor
Omaha, NE – Wesley T. Vavra, 51, of Omaha, Nebraska, was sentenced to 235 months in federal prison for attempting to coerce and entice a minor.
According to court documents, between May 2022 and July 16, 2022, Vavra communicated with someone he thought was interested in ‘open family play dates’ on the Whisper application and through text messages. The other Whisper user was a law enforcement officer working in an undercover capacity pretending to be a father with an 8-year-old child.
Vavra arranged to meet the undercover officer on July 18, 2022, to engage in sexual acts with the supposed father’s 8-year-old child. Vavra was arrested upon arrival at the meetup location in Omaha. Vavra’s cell phone was seized and analysis showed that in addition to communicating with the undercover officer, Vavra was also communicating with someone he thought was a 13-year-old female during this same timeframe. The 13-year-old female was also a law enforcement officer working in an undercover capacity.
Vavra was convicted of attempted coercion and enticement of a minor by a jury on August 23, 2023. Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. sentenced Vavra to 235 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Vavra’s release from prison, he will begin a 10-year term of supervised release.
The case was investigated by the Omaha FBI’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force and the Douglas County’s Sheriff’s Office.
