WEST MIFFLIN MAN SENTENCED TO 66 MONTHS FOR COCAINE CONSPIRACY
A 34-year-old West Mifflin man has been sentenced to 66 months in prison for conspiring to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Aaron Atkins, 34, was sentenced by United States District Judge Mark R. Hornak, who stated that the sentence was sufficient but not greater than necessary to fulfill the goals of sentencing.
Atkins was convicted of conspiracy to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, a charge that carries a minimum of five years in prison.
The investigation into Atkins’ activities began in December 2013, when federal and local law enforcement agencies launched a wiretap investigation into drug trafficking and violence in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh.
During the investigation, Atkins was intercepted over the wire conspiring with others to possess with intent to distribute and distribute cocaine, which was shipped from California to the Western District of Pennsylvania through the United States Postal Service or commercial carrier.
Assistant United States Attorney Tonya Sulia Goodman prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, and U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton commended the agencies that worked on the investigation, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Greater Pittsburgh Safe Streets Task Force, and several local police departments.
Atkins’ sentencing brings an end to a lengthy investigation that involved multiple agencies working together to take down a major cocaine trafficking operation.
