Cory Jean Gainey, Gun Purchase Fraud, WV 2015

ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA – Cory Jean Gainey, a 24-year-old from Reedsville, made headlines as he pleaded guilty to the unlawful purchase of a firearm. The charge came after Gainey admitted to providing a false statement during the transaction in October 2015, falsely claiming to be the actual buyer when he was actually purchasing the weapon on behalf of another individual.

United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen announced the plea, which carries potential penalties of up to ten years in federal prison and a fine reaching $250,000. The severity of Gainey’s sentence will depend on the seriousness of the offense and any prior criminal history he may have.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Traci M. Cook handled the prosecution for the government, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), along with local law enforcement agencies such as the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department and the Morgantown Police Department, conducted the investigation.

The case was presided over by U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi, ensuring due process for all parties involved.

Gainey’s actions have sparked concerns about firearms trafficking and the need for stricter regulations in West Virginia. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what additional charges or sentences may arise from this case.
