Wethersfield, Conn. – Carlos Carrillo, a 19-year-old from Wethersfield, has pleaded guilty in federal court for distributing heroin that authorities say played a role in the tragic death of a young woman.
Carrillo waived his right to be indicted and admitted to one count of distribution of heroin during today’s hearing at the Hartford federal court. The charges stem from an incident on July 16, 2016, when Carrillo sold two bags of heroin to a victim and her juvenile friend for ten dollars.
Responding to an emergency call, Wethersfield Police discovered the young woman unresponsive in a bedroom of a local residence. She was later pronounced dead at the scene. A torn wax paper packet containing heroin was found under her body, and another on the nightstand, according to court documents.
The investigation revealed that Carrillo was selling drugs as part of an ongoing statewide initiative targeting dealers who distribute heroin, fentanyl, or opioids responsible for causing death or serious injury among users. Carrillo was arrested on a federal criminal complaint just two months after the incident.
Scheduled to be sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Alfred V. Covello on April 20, 2017, Carrillo faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years for his crime. The case is being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Wethersfield Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jennifer P. Laraia and Michael E. Runowicz handling the prosecution.
Carrillo’s plea comes as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of heroin distribution and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to combat this epidemic.
