Wheelchair Gangster Hennings Gets 27+ Years for TN Drug Ring
JACKSON, TN – James Calvin Hennings, 43, of Milan, Tennessee, will spend over 27 years in federal prison for orchestrating a ruthless drug trafficking operation across Western Tennessee and continuing criminal activity *while* incarcerated. The sentence, handed down by a federal judge today, marks the final conviction in a sprawling case targeting a fentanyl and methamphetamine pipeline that poisoned communities throughout the region. Joseph C. Murphy, Jr., Interim United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee, announced the stiff penalty.
The investigation, a joint effort by the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, began with a series of controlled purchases in March and April of 2022. These quickly escalated into a Title III wiretap operation running from May 20th to July 6th, 2022. Evidence revealed Hennings was a key distributor, sourcing narcotics from California and Middle Tennessee and pushing them onto the streets of Western Tennessee. Hennings, identified as an affiliate of the Crip Street Gang, leveraged his physical limitations – confined to a wheelchair after a prior shooting – to manipulate co-conspirators. He traded methamphetamine and cash for their help in distributing his deadly product.
The feds weren’t fooled. Intercepted communications showed Hennings actively attempting to order more drugs from out-of-state sources, even as law enforcement worked to intercept the shipments. He also allegedly sought to acquire firearms, clearly intending to retaliate for the attack that left him disabled. Agents ultimately seized a staggering haul: 2,361 grams of methamphetamine, 4,197 fentanyl pills totaling 452 grams, several pounds of marijuana, and three firearms connected to the drug trafficking organization. The bust effectively dismantled a significant source of poison flooding the area.
But Hennings didn’t stop there. Even after his initial arrest and incarceration on the federal drug charges, he was discovered possessing a *cellular telephone* inside a United States Marshals holding facility, continuing his criminal enterprise from behind bars. This blatant disregard for the law only solidified his lengthy sentence. Several co-conspirators have already faced justice: Robert Linningham, 41, of Humboldt, TN, received 120 months and five years of supervised release for conspiracy to distribute fentanyl. Justin Cody Rodgers, 37, of Jackson, TN, was sentenced to 66 months and five years of supervised release for methamphetamine conspiracy.
“This sentence reflects Homeland Security Investigations’ (HSI) commitment to ensuring criminals face severe consequences when they flood our communities with illegal contraband,” stated HSI Nashville Special Agent in Charge Rana Saoud. “The removal of dangerous narcotics from our streets affirms our commitment to ensuring public safety and protecting our citizens from the devastating impact caused by illegal drugs. We will not tolerate those individuals who prey on some of the most vulnerable members in our communities.”
The investigation was conducted under the umbrella of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, a multi-agency approach designed to dismantle major drug trafficking networks. Numerous agencies contributed to the successful prosecution, including the Jackson Police Department, Lexington Police Department, Milan Police Department, Internal Revenue Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Twenty-Sixth Judicial District Drug Task Force, the United States Marshals Service, and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Christie Hopper and Hi led the prosecution.
