The streets of Okmulgee are a little safer today thanks to the sentencing of a local resident who thought they could skirt the law.
MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – 27-year-old Wilbert Lamon Rivers, of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, was sentenced to 41 months in prison for one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition.
The charge arose from an investigation by the Muscogee (Creek) Lighthorse Police Department, the Okmulgee Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. On November 4, 2023, law enforcement discovered Rivers in possession of forty rounds of ammunition and a semi-automatic pistol capable of accepting a large capacity magazine after having been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
The Honorable John F. Heil, III, U.S. District Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, presided over the hearing.
Rivers will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending transportation to a designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility to serve a non-paroleable sentence of incarceration.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan E. Soverly represented the United States.
