SCRANTON, PA – The grim reaper of the streets, Thomas Abreu Jr., 35, from Wilkes-Barre, has been dealt a 93-month federal prison sentence for his role in the sinister world of heroin trafficking and firearms offenses.
This was announced today by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. The judge’s hammer fell on Abreu for possessing with intent to distribute a massive quantity of heroin, as well as three stolen firearms, during his drug trade activities.
The evidence against Abreu was as incriminating as it gets. On July 26, 2015, he was found in a Wilkes-Barre motel room, surrounded by the tools of his deadly trade. Heroin, packaged for distribution, drug paraphernalia, a firearm holster, and $8,449 in cash were all recovered at the scene. Abreu’s confession revealed that he intended to distribute up to 80 grams of heroin – a mountainous amount worth thousands on the streets.
Abreu was indicted on January 9, 2016, by a grand jury. He pleaded guilty on June 21, 2016, under a plea agreement. His time in custody began on the day he was caught, and it’s set to end after he serves his lengthy sentence.
The investigation that led to Abreu’s downfall was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Wilkes-Barre Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Phillip J. Caraballo prosecuted the case with tenacity.
This case is part of the Violent Crime Reduction Partnership (VCRP), an initiative aimed at combating violent crime in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. It’s also a part of a wider effort to tackle the national heroin epidemic, led by the United States Attorney’s Office, with support from federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
