A sense of tragedy hung over the nation’s capital yesterday evening as two young lives were cut short in separate traffic accidents. In a heart-stopping display of speed and recklessness, 25-year-old Alexandria veteran William C. Carr Jr. met his untimely demise on Route 1, just a mile south of his hometown. The young man’s life was forever altered when his convertible coupe attempted to pass another vehicle traveling in the same direction. A catastrophic collision ensued, with Carr’s right front fender striking the left rear fender of the other car. The speeding vehicle careened out of control, ultimately crashing into a nearby tree with devastating force.
