In a devastating turn of events, two young men from Pike County, Kentucky, lost their lives in a tragic highway crash on Monday, April 14, 1947. The accident occurred at approximately 8 o’clock on US Highway 23, five miles south of Pikeville, Kentucky. A 1947 Hudson car, driven by Garrett Billetter, 30, of Chloe Creek, near Pikeville, veered off course and collided with a parked vehicle before slamming into a semi-truck loaded with furniture. The impact was catastrophic, and Billetter was instantly killed due to a crushed skull and chest injury. His passenger, Austin Henry Billetter, 22, also of Chloe Creek, succumbed to his injuries at 1:40 a.m. the following day at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital. A third occupant, P.M. Hilton Luster, remains in critical condition at the Pikeville hospital, though the extent of his injuries is unknown at this time. The Hudson car was left in shambles, while the furniture truck sustained significant damage. Garrett Billetter, a son of Henry and Jettie Huffman Ford Billetter, leaves behind his wife, Mary Compton Billetter, and three sisters, including Mrs. Aretta Pinson. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.
